What to Do If You Just Got Scammed Online in Nigeria

What to Do If You Just Got Scammed Online in Nigeria

If you just realised you've been scammed, take a breath first. You're not the first person this has happened to, and acting quickly now can still make a difference.

Start by contacting your bank immediately to report the transaction and ask about a possible reversal — some banks can freeze suspicious transfers if you act fast enough. Screenshot every conversation, payment proof, and profile detail connected to the scammer; this becomes important if you report the case. File a report with the Nigeria Police Force's cybercrime unit or the EFCC — even if recovery feels unlikely, reports help build cases against repeat offenders. And warn others: a quick post naming the scammer's account or page can save someone else from the same loss.

It's also worth being honest with yourself about how it happened. Most online scams succeed because payment was sent before anything was verified. That's not a personal failure — it's simply how most Nigerians have always transacted online: direct payment, then hope.

Going forward, there's a way to remove that gap entirely.

VetandPay › VetandPay holds your payment in escrow until your transaction is confirmed and complete, so a seller can never simply disappear with your money again. You can't undo what already happened, but you can make sure it's the last time. Let your next transaction be a protected one.
