How to Avoid Property Rental Scams in Nigeria

How to Avoid Property Rental Scams in Nigeria

A beautiful apartment, a reasonable price, and an agent who wants payment before you can see the place in person. This is how most rental scams in Nigeria begin — and by the time the victim realises the listing was fake, the money is already gone.

Rental scams often follow familiar patterns: fake listings copied from real properties, pressure to pay agent fees or deposits before an inspection, and people impersonating landlords or agents who don't actually control the property.

A few precautions help. Never pay anything before physically inspecting the property, or at minimum, verifying it through a trusted local contact. Confirm the agent's identity and, where possible, the landlord's ownership documents. Be especially cautious of listings priced noticeably below the market rate — that's usually the bait.

Even careful renters get caught sometimes, because the pressure to secure a good apartment quickly can override caution. This is exactly why rental transactions need more than good instincts — they need a safety net.
